1. What is a self-paced/asynchronous quiz?
1. What is a Self-Paced (Asynchronous) Quiz?
A self-paced quiz—also known as an asynchronous quiz—lets participants or students complete questions in their own time, without the presenter or lecturer running the poll live.
Once opened, participants can join via the Vevox app, answer questions at their own pace, and submit when ready. Scoring, correct answers, and explanations can appear instantly—ideal for homework, flipped-classroom prep, exam practice, or asynchronous learning.
Lecturers or hosts can also automate the process by setting the self-paced quiz to open and close automatically, and even apply a time limit (e.g., 30 minutes) for completion—no manual start or stop needed.
Immediate feedback helps students learn from mistakes, build confidence, and reflect on their understanding—making it a great formative assessment tool while helping instructors identify knowledge gaps.
Vevox self-paced quizzes also sync with LMS platforms like Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and Brightspace, automatically pushing scores to gradebooks.
Event organizers can use self-paced quizzes for pre-training checks or pre-, mid-, and post-event feedback.
You’ll find this feature under the Survey section—it’s technically a survey with the added bonus of individual scoring.
2. How Self-Paced Quizzes Differ from Live Quizzes
- Live quizzes happen in real time, with everyone answering at the same time within a set time limit.
- Self-paced quizzes are completed individually, at any time within the open period.
- Leaderboards: Live quizzes show full group leaderboards for comparison, while self-paced quizzes show only the individual’s score (personal to each participant) and the top 3 leaderboard positions. No names are shared.
3. When to use self-paced quizzes:
In Education
- Revision Quizzes: Share after a lecture to help students review key points.
- Flipped Classroom Prep: Assign before class to gauge understanding of pre-reading materials.
- Formative Assessment: Test knowledge mid-semester for feedback without grading pressure.
- Asynchronous Learning: Ideal for distance or blended learning courses.
In Events & Business Training
- Pre-Training Check-ins: Gauge attendee knowledge levels before workshops.
- Post-Event Learning: Reinforce key takeaways after conferences or webinars.
- Compliance & Onboarding: Allow employees to complete required training at their convenience.
- Knowledge Retention Quizzes: Send follow-up quizzes to measure long-term impact.
4. Important notes when using self-paced quizzes
- Self-paced quizzes are available on Starter plans and up.
- Self-paced quizzes can start and stop automatically — no manual opening required.
- You can set a time limit (e.g. 30 minutes) for completion. If a participant leaves the app, the timer continues and automatically closes the quiz when time is up.
- You can choose what participants see after finishing the self-paced quiz:
- Their individual score (whether identified or anonymous)
- Correct answers & explanations
- A leaderboard of the top 3 scorers
- Or no feedback at all
- Participants cannot go back and change answers once submitted.
- If a question is skipped, no score is awarded.
- To announce a winner, your participants must be identified so you can view their names in the data report.
- The session host can access all self-paced quiz data in the Survey tab of the Excel report.
- You can combine feedback questions (no correct answers) with quiz questions (scored).
- Remind participants when the quiz opens and closes.
