Self-paced quizzes are available on Starter plans and up.
Self-paced quizzes are based on the survey feature, but include questions with correct answers. You’ll find them under the Self-paced section in your Vevox dashboard.
Note: The Self-paced section was previously called the Survey section.
Create a self-paced quiz:
Create a session.
Select 'Self-paced' from the navigation menu.
Press the '+ Add activity' button.
Select Quiz from the dialogue that open. Remember, surveys are for when you are wanting to gather opinion based feedback, quizzes are for when you want to test knowledge with correct answers.
Press the + Add Question button to add a new question to your quiz. Select the type of question you would like to create. You can choose between multichoice, text, ranking, matching, numeric, rating scale, Pin on image & Pin on Choice image question types. (Word cloud and XY plot are not available in self paced activities.)
Add correct answers to questions that should be scored. This allows you to show scores, explain correct answers, and display leaderboards. If you include a question without correct answer, this will be included in the quiz, but will not count towards the score.
Press 'Done' to save your question. Repeat this process to add multiple questions to your quiz.
You can include both scored and non-scored (feedback) questions. You can also add questions from the question library including questions from: My previous questions, Vevox sample content, Account collections or AI generated questions or Import questions.
Advanced Settings
Please note that the 'Survey' section is now called 'Self-paced', and the UI has changed slightly, but the functionality remains the same.
Open the Quiz settings to personalize your quiz setup.
1. Edit the quiz description
Update the default description with a quiz-specific introduction. This text appears on participant devices before they start the quiz. Click 'Save' to update the new description, or keep the default if preferred.
2. Shuffle the question order
Enable Shuffle question order to randomize how questions appear for each participant.
This prevents predictable order bias and reduces the chance of answer sharing. You can toggle this setting on or off at any time.
3. Schedule when your quiz opens and closes (Pro plans and above)
You can automate when your self-paced quiz becomes available to participants by setting a start and end time. Once a start time is reached, the quiz automatically opens in the participant app and stays open until the end time (if one is set). If no end time is entered, the quiz will remain open until you close it manually.
If no schedule is set, you can still manually open or close the quiz using the Open Quiz and Close Quiz buttons in the dashboard. As soon as the quiz is opened, it will appear in the participant app..
Participants will see the quiz icon in the Vevox app (and in LTI-connected systems like Brightspace, Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas) as soon as the quiz is open. If you’re using LTI, make sure your quiz is linked to the correct course so students can access it smoothly.
Remember:
- Once a quiz is closed, no further responses can be submitted — but participants can still view the correct answers and explanations (if enabled).
- Once participants press Submit at the end of the self-paced quiz, their responses are final and can’t be changed.
- If a participant doesn’t start the quiz during the scheduled time window, they’ll receive a score of zero.
At the scheduled end time, a ‘Closed’ label will appear next to the quiz in the participant app. Participants will no longer be able to take part unless the quiz is reopened. The quiz will remain visible in the app for review, but it will only disappear completely once it’s unpublished.
Things to note when scheduling your self-paced quiz:
- For a quiz to appear and be open in the participant app, two things must happen:
- The Vevox session must be started.
- The quiz must be open — either manually or automatically via a schedule.
- The schedule automates opening and closing but does not send reminders to participants.
- Manual opening/closing always overrides the scheduled times.
- Progress auto-saves if a participant leaves midway — they’ll see their previous answers when returning, but must still press Submit to complete the quiz.
- The time zone used for your scheduled self-paced quiz will use the same time zone as the one set under the 'Session setup' area of your session settings (see image below). This time zone is taken from the time zone of your computer when you create your session. Keep this in mind if you’re running self-paced quizzes across different time zones.
You can verify your time zone under Settings. The session setup view shows the time zone, while the start & end time appears in the Quiz settings.
4. Set a time limit for quiz completion (Pro plans and above)
The Time Limit feature helps you manage quiz integrity and ensures timely completion.
When a time limit is set, the countdown begins as soon as a participant starts the quiz for the first time.
Before starting, participants will see a warning message showing how much time they have to complete the quiz. A timer icon will appear next to the quiz name, and a visible countdown timer will track their remaining time.
The Time Limit option only appears in your dashboard settings once you’ve added at least one quiz question with a correct answer. If you adjust the advanced settings first, you won’t see this option yet.
Vevox automatically saves responses during a timed quiz. If a participant reopens the quiz before their time expires, they’ll find their previous answers intact and can continue where they left off. When the timer runs out, the quiz closes automatically — any completed answers are submitted on the participant’s behalf, while unanswered questions won’t be counted. A confirmation message will show how many questions were answered. A ‘Closed’ label will appear next to the quiz name in the participant app once the quiz has closed, either manually or automatically through the schedule setting.
5. Customize quiz summary screen (Pro plans and above)
Once participants complete the quiz and press Submit, they’ll see a quiz summary screen showing their results.
You can customize this summary to match your session goals and decide how much feedback participants receive.
You can choose to display:
- The correct answers (correct answer explanation will automatically show as well)
- Show total score (this is the participant’s individual score) or
- Hide total score (choose not to show a score summary at all)
- Show total score & leaderboard (incl. top three scorers)
To customize what participants see in the summary, select the relevant options under the 'Quiz summary screen'.
The default quiz summary settings will always display :
- The participant’s individual score
- The total number of responses submitted
- Individual questions link to review answers and explanations (if enabled)
In the example above, this participant submitted six responses across six questions. The quiz score shows 8/12, as partial scoring awarded extra points for partially correct multiple-choice answers.
Display correct answers
After submitting a self-paced quiz, participants can review their responses. In the participant app, they can click the ‘Individual questions’ link below their quiz scores to see which answers they chose, find out what was correct or incorrect, and read any answer explanations (if provided).
By default, Vevox shows correct answers after submission. If you prefer not to share them, simply untick the ‘Show correct answer’ option in the quiz summary screen.
The ‘Individual questions’ view displays:

Self-paced quiz Scoring
By default, each correct answer awards 1 point. If advanced scoring is enabled, you can:
- Assign different point values for each question
- Enable partial scoring to reward nearly correct answers
When the total score and leaderboard are displayed in the quiz summary screen, only the top three scorers will be revealed in the participant app. To see a further basic breakdown of the scores, click on the 'View leaderboard' option in the dashboard. The top 6 scores will be listed as well as the average participant score.
For the leaderboard display option: Because a self-paced quiz is completed asynchronously, scores on the leaderboard are dynamic and may update over time. For example, when Student A submits their quiz with a score of 10/12, they may appear in first place. However, if Student B later completes the quiz and scores 12/12, Student A will move down to second place and Student B will take the top position on the leaderboard.
The leaderboard in the dashboard will never display participant names, even if the session is set to identified. However, if identification was enabled, you can still access participant names by downloading the Excel data report — check the Survey Results tab for full leaderboard details. (See Quiz data section below.)
Test your self-paced quiz
Before sharing your quiz with others, it’s a good idea to test it yourself. Follow the same process as when you test a survey.
Access & download quiz data
As a host, you can easily view and download results for your self-paced quiz. Go to the Data section in your dashboard and open the 'Self-Paced Results' tab. Here, you’ll see a session summary and a “survey in numbers” overview. Scroll down to view a visual breakdown of how participants responded in the self-paced quiz.
For a more detailed analysis, export the Session Data Report. In the downloaded Excel file, open the 'Self-paced summary' & 'Self-paced Results' tabs at the bottom to find your self-paced quiz results.
Your data report includes:
- Self-paced Summary – a high-level overview of responses for each question.

Self-paced Results – a detailed breakdown showing how each participant answered.
- Green = correct answers
- Red = incorrect answers
- Yellow = pin on image responses
If your session’s Identification setting is set to Anonymous, all participant names will appear as “Anonymous.”
The data can be accessed anytime while the survey is still in its start mode and available for completion. To ensure you get the final results, first close the quiz & unpublish it, and then download all the reporting.

Create multiple self-paced quizzes
You can create as many self-paced quizzes as you like in a single session. Follow the same setup steps above to add additional quizzes. Each quiz will appear separately under the Self-paced tab. All quizzes in the same session share the same 9-digit Session ID, but only one quiz can be open and active at a time.
To run multiple self-paced quizzes simultaneously, upgrade to an Enterprise plan (Business) or a Pro/Institution plan (Education).
