Team Leaderboards are available on Pro plans and above. Want to upgrade?
1. What is a Team Leaderboard?
A Team Leaderboard tracks the performance of teams and ranks them based on their quiz scores, as opposed to a standard leaderboard that ranks individual participants.
Team Leaderboards are ideal for employee training, team-building, and engagement activities.
Features of Team Leaderboards:
- Team leaderboards are displayed in Present view and in participant apps.
- You can switch between Team and Individual Leaderboards anytime.
- You can have multiple Team (demographic) questions and display quiz scores based on different team breakdowns.
2. How to set up a Team Leaderboard
There are two basic requirements for being able to use the Team Leaderboard feature:
- Have a question that defines what the teams are
- Have one or more quiz questions
A. Define your teams
Creating your teams utilizes the Demographic question type. Simply create a demographic question and set the choices to be the names of the teams you want to have.
B. Create your quiz questions
Quiz questions are simply any question that has a correct answer. You can create quiz questions in the dashboard or use the AI Quiz feature to generate a quiz for you automatically.
C. Set your demographic question as your team question
Once you have those two basic requirements of a Team Leaderboard you should see the leaderboard panel in your Vevox dashboard
From this leaderboard panel you can configure which of your demographic questions you want to be the Team question that sets the basis for the Team Leaderboard. Only one demographic question can be assigned as the Team question at a time, but if you have multiple demographic questions, you can change which one is assigned as the Team question whenever you like. This will display a different Leaderboard score.
You can change the Team question from the ‘more options’ menu in the leaderboard panel.
Selecting the ‘No Teams’ option will delink the team question and revert the team leaderboard to an Individual leaderboard.
D. Run the Team question & quiz questions
Next, run through the questions with your audience to generate results for display.
It's recommended (but not required) to ask the Team question first. If your team question is not in the right order, you can reorder and move it to the top.
E. Display the Team Leaderboard
You can show the Team Leaderboard anytime in your quiz after at least one Team question and one quiz question have been answered when clicking on the trophy icon. The leaderboard will be displayed in Present View and in the participant app.
When a team question has been assigned and contains results, displaying the leaderboard will always show the Team Leaderboard first. From the Team Leaderboard, you can switch to the Individual Leaderboard by pressing the ‘Individual Leaderboard’ button.
If your team question has no results or you have not assigned a team question, the Leaderboard displayed will be the Individual one.
You can display different Leaderboards when you change the Team question.
- If a participant skips the Team question but answers all the quiz questions, they'll receive a message in their app when the leaderboard is displayed, confirming they weren’t assigned or 'Unplaced' to a team. Their scores won’t count toward team calculations.
- Quiz questions and poll results appear in the Data report, Team Leaderboard scores are omitted.
3. How does the Team Leaderboard scoring work?
Vevox uses the averages of the Team to calculate the team scores. Instead of adding up individual scores, the Team Leaderboard determines the team's score by calculating the average of the scores within that team. Each question is worth a maximum of 100 points.
For example:
- If all members answer correctly, the team gets 100 points.
- If half the team answers correctly, the team gets 50 points.
- If only a third answers correctly, the team gets 33 points.
This ensures fairness, so larger teams don’t automatically have an advantage over smaller teams.
Since points are not percentages, multiple correct answers accumulate. Two correctly answered questions by all members would total 200 points.
Score Example: The Hire Power (HR) Team has 8 members:
- For Q1, 5 members answered correctly: 5 ÷ 8 × 100 = 62.5 → rounded to 63 points.
- For Q2, 7 members answered correctly: 7 ÷ 8 × 100 = 87.5 → rounded to 88 points.
- For Q3, 3 members answered correctly: 3 ÷ 8 × 100 = 37.5 → rounded to 38 points.
Total Team Score after 3 questions: 63+ 88+25 = 188 points (taking the rounding off into consideration)
A team member that does not answer a question, is still a team member. Not answering counts the same as an incorrect answer, so this will bring down the average of the team score.
4. Team Leaderboard Constraints & Restrictions
- No speed scoring (only for individual leaderboards).
- Unassigned participants (who didn’t answer the Team question) won’t contribute to the Team score but will still appear in the Individual leaderboard.
- Tie scores are possible but become less likely as more questions are asked or with larger team sizes.
- There are no set team size limits.
- Real-time results are recommended for the team question. When participants pick teams themselves, enabling real-time results will ensure you can view & help balance team sizes.
- If the leaderboard doesn’t update after adding late team members, refresh the page.
- Reopening the team question. Beware of reopening the team question after the quiz has begun. While this will allow latecomers to join a team, it will also allow other participants to switch teams.
- Include non-scoring questions or polls between quiz questions (these won’t affect scores).
