What is a demographically segmented poll?
Using demographic segmentation can help you gain a deeper understanding of your audience, users, or participants. First, conduct a demographic poll to gather key information/characteristics, followed by an opinion poll. The results of the opinion poll can then be segmented according to the characteristics collected.
When conducting a demographic poll, you can divide your audience according to various characteristics such as age, usage habits, needs, interests, values, location, occupation, education level, buying preferences, department, family size, nationality, gender, and life stages.
A poll qualifies as a demographic poll if:
- It is a multiple-choice poll.
- Participants can select only one option from a maximum of 10 choices. For a clearer display, we suggest 3-6 choice options.
- No correct answers can be assigned to this poll.
- The demographic split will only appear in bar result formats, not pie formats. The colors used in the bar chart are fixed and comply with our accessibility standards.
Steps to create demographics segmentation:
Step 1: Create a demographic poll
In the Polls section select the '+ Create new' button.
Select 'Multichoice' as the poll type.
Enter the 'Question title' of your poll.
Enter the 'Choices' you want your participants to choose from (a maximum of 10).
Don't allocate a correct answer. Then, keep the default allowed selection as one. Press 'Create'.
Repeat this process if you want additional polls to split by demographics.
Step 2: Create an opinion poll
Follow numbers 1-5 above, ensuring your question title and choice options represent an opinion question —that is, what they think, like, prefer, etc.
You can create several different opinion polls in one session. Compared to the demographic poll, all of these opinion polls can be used to develop demographic segmented or split results.
Step 3: Present both polls and then display the demographic breakdown
After presenting both the demographic poll and the opinion poll in Present view and sharing the voting results, select the demographic split icon next to the relevant opinion poll to display a breakdown by demographics.
You can display the demographic-segmented polls right after each opinion poll is answered.
Alternatively, you can complete all polls first, then return to the demographic poll and choose which opinion polls to reveal the segmentation split. When you display the demographic poll results and click on the demographic split icon on the right side of the display, it will show a selection of all of the opinion polls you compare it to.
Hover over the legend to see the breakdown.
The 'Did Not Answer' label shows that a participant(s) skipped the demographic poll but did respond to the opinion poll. Note that the demographic split is only visible in Present view and does not appear in the participant app.
How to access the demographic split after your session ends
While the data report and its result images won’t display a visual of the demographic segmentation, you can still access this information after your session ends.
To do this, reopen your session, go into Present view, and restart the session. Display the opinion poll, select the demographic split icon, and take a screenshot.
For raw data, go to the Data section in your dashboard, click 'Download Data Report,' and open the Excel file. Then, to view detailed results, check the 'Polling Summary' and 'Polling Results' tabs at the bottom.
