In this article we show you how you can:
- Create a 'rank in order of preference' poll
- Create a 'rank in the correct order' poll
- How to interpret the data report for a ranking poll.
Ranking polls are used when you want your participants to either rank the order of choices as per their preference, or rank the choices in the correct order.
Ranking polls are available on Presenter plans and above. Do you want to upgrade your account?
To set up a 'rank in order of preference' poll:
In the Polls section select the '+ Create new' button.
Select 'Ranking' as the poll type.
Enter the 'Question title' of your poll. That is your question you want to ask.
If you prefer, add an image to the poll question by clicking on the picture icon. Either upload a preferred image from your computer or use the built-in library of licensed images. (If you have a Free account, you will not have access to this feature.)
The default setting of the ranking polls is ‘By preference’. Keep this setting.
Enter the 'Choices' you would like your participants to choose from. Click on the three dots next to the individual choices to move them up/down the list or to delete a choice.
Decide how many selections or choices your participants can make when answering the poll. The default is the same as the number of choices.
Press 'Create'.
There is no correct answer for this poll type and no point allocation.
You are limited to 15 choices for this question type, but be mindful that the longer the list, the more scrolling participants need to do and the longer your poll needs to stay open.
What participants will see
Once the poll is closed, the Present view & participant app will display the amalgamated ordered results of all the votes.
To set up a ‘rank the choices in the correct order’ poll:
In the Polls section select the '+ Create new' button.
Select 'Ranking' as the poll type.
Enter the 'Question title' of your poll. That is your question you want to ask.
If you prefer, add an image to the poll question by clicking on the picture icon. Either upload a preferred image from your computer or use the built-in library of licensed images. (If you have a Free account, you will not have access to this feature.)
Default setting of the ranking polls is ‘By preference’. Change it to ‘In Correct Order’.
Enter the 'Choices' you would like your participants to choose from. Click on the three dots next to the individual choices to move them up/down the list or to delete a choice.
Allocate the correct order next to the choice options. In this example, Potassium Floride is the first correct option (thus, allocate number 1 to it). Then the second right option is Acetic Acid (allocate a 2 to it) and so on. Butane has the lowest boiling point.
You can add a correct answer explanation should you wish.
The allowed selections will default to the same number of choices you have. You can set it to less so that participants can only order a fewer number of choices.
Press 'Create'.
Scoring: One point is allocated to the participant if ALL the choices are submitted in the correct order. Should one of the choices not match the correct order, no points will be allocated.
What will participants see?
When voting on a ranking poll, participants must press the ‘Send ‘button after selecting all their choices. Once they have pressed the send button, it will show ‘Vote received’ in the participant app. Votes can always be cleared and re-entered while the poll is still open.
When the host closes the poll, the participant will see:
1. The Present view showing the participants' poll results in the order of the most common (amalgamated) responses.
The participants will also see the most common responses on their devices as well as that they have voted.
2. When the host reveals the Correct Answer by pressing the ‘Show correct answer’ in the control bar, Present view will now show the correct order of the poll and the correct answer explanation.
(To show the correct answer, remember to press the button in the control bar.)
The participant app will reveal two sets of results when displaying the correct answer. Toggle between what the participant voted and the correct order of the poll.
Reporting on a ranking poll
Download the Excel sheet when you want to see the data reporting on the ranking poll. Or you can download the data image.
1. For the 'Rank in correct order’ poll, you will find:
The result image will always show the Most Common Response. See the data report for the correct answer.
In Excel, under the ‘Polling Summary tab, you will find all the details regarding the ranking poll including:
- The poll type
- The number of responses a participant is allowed to rank
- The choice options & descriptions
- As well as the correct answer number next to those choices
- How many participants got all the options in the correct order
From these stats, you can see in the choice options that Methyl Formate was choice number 1 on the list but should have ranked as number 3 to count towards a correct answer, and Butane should have been ranked as the last choice to earn any points. Only 5.88% of all the participants got all four choices in the correct order.
2. For the 'Rank by preference’ poll you will find:
The data image will show the choices with the highest weighting first to the lowest weighting last.
In Excel, under the ‘Polling Summary tab’ you will get:
- The poll type
- The number of responses a participant is allowed to rank
- The choice options & descriptions
- As well as the correct answer number next to those choices
- Total number of responses received
From these stats, you can see participants could choose and rank up to 6 choices, the number of participants equals the number of responses per choice (16). And lastly, the cumulative weighting of each response. In this example, the Champagne Tester got the highest weighting (69), then reality contestant (65), followed by a professional sleeper (64) and so on.
The ‘Polling Results’ tab in Excel will also identify each participant’s individual votes. This session was set to anonymous, and therefore no names were displayed. Each Excel row represents the votes that a participant made. Red will always indicate a wrong order, and green a correct order (for all the choices).
Looking at the Excel sheet, the participant in row 10 only voted for the first poll, which is why the other two polls are empty. Row 13’s participant had one correct answer (green block), and Row 21’s participant had two correct answers.
